An Update on Ukraine.

News | Sanvi Belani | September 15th, 2022.

As the 200-day mark in the war between Russia and Ukraine approaches, Ukraine has made significant developments in recapturing land.

Ukraine’s “lightning advance in the northeast” into 20 towns has allowed the military to recapture hundreds of square miles of territory. A separate offensive allowed Ukraine to recapture nearly 200 square miles in the southern region of Kherson. The goal of this offensive was to cut off Russian soldiers that occupied the region west of the Dnipro River, a territory that Russia claimed during the initial invasion. Ukraine was also able to retake land in the south.

Although Russia has withdrawn forces from nearly all of the northeastern Kharkiv region, the Russian military still occupies vast areas of land in eastern and southern Ukraine. In fact, Russian forces retaliated on Sunday night and Monday, launching attacks on infrastructure facilities in Kharkiv that left thousands of civilians without power and water. A police station in Kharkiv was also attacked.

Due to the smaller size and amount of materials of the Ukrainian military, senior Pentagon and White House officials express doubts about whether Ukraine has the capability to reclaim all of the lands that it had before the invasion.
