Oxford High School Shooting.

On Tuesday, November 30, 15-year old student Ethan Crumbley open fire at Oxford High School in Michigan, shooting 11 people. As of Wednesday, December 1, four students were killed and several more remain in critical condition.

On Tuesday at 12:51 pm, authorities received over a hundred 911 calls about the shooting. Security footage shows the suspect emerging from the school bathroom and open firing on students in the hallway. Despite students rushing for cover, within just five minutes, 11 people had been shot. Crumbley fired around 30 shots from a semiautomatic handgun before deputies gained control. Oakland County Undersheriff Michael McCabe claims the suspect “gave up without any problems.”

Investigators have yet to pinpoint a motive in the attack. After viewing security footage to track Crumbley’s actions, it appeared that the targets of the attack were random.

On Wednesday, December 1, Crumbley was charged as an adult with one count of terrorism causing death, four counts of first-degree murder, seven counts of assault with attempt to commit murder, and 12 counts of possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Many of these charges are punishable with life in prison.

Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald stated that additional charges were still possible, including charges on the suspect’s parents. McDonald said investigators had plentiful evidence that the shooting was premeditated.

Crumbley’s father purchased the gun on November 26, just days before the shooting. It remains unclear how Crumbley came into possession of the weapon. In Michigan, a state ranked 20th in the country for gun control laws, it is illegal for persons under the age of 18 to have possession of a firearm; in schools, it is illegal to carry a concealed firearm, and some school districts have even banned open carry. In 2021 alone, there have been 29 school shootings, this one being the deadliest.
