On September 8, 2022, after a 70-year reign, Queen Elizabeth II died, ending the longest reign by a British Monarch. The daughter of Prince Albert, the duke of York, and Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Elizabeth II ascended to the throne from the early age of 25 due to King George VI’s decline in health. During her long reign, she greatly transformed the kingdom she presided over, not only by rebuilding Britain after World War II but also by “defining an era,” according to Joe Biden, the current president of the United States.

The former Queen created and continued relationships with new countries, such as the first visit to Germany since WWII, reconciling the two countries. The queen also maintained a great relationship with the United States and the French. Due to the somewhat unexpected nature of the Queen’s death, many are wondering what is next for Britain.

Immediately upon Queen Elizabeth II’s passing, Prince Charles, her eldest son, was crowned King. However, his coronation ceremony will not take place until months after the funeral of his mother. Queen Elizabeth’s funeral is planned for September 19th at Westminister Abbey as citizens of the country honor her memory. She will be remembered dearly as one of the most transformative monarchs in British history and her everlasting impact will continue to shape Britain’s monarchy for many years to come.
